Is It Worth Buying a Nintendo Switch in 2025?

Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch 2 was revealed in January 2025, and its full specifications were announced on April 2. It is also scheduled for release in most countries on June 5, 2025. While many gamers will be buying the latest Nintendo console, some are wondering if it’s still worth buying the first Nintendo Switch.

I’ll explain some of the reasons why having a Switch in 2025 is still beneficial.

Nintendo Switch

Price of the Nintendo Switch

The Switch was released on March 3, 2017, which means it’s already 8 years old. That’s already a long life for most consoles. This means that the prices will definitely be in an affordable range compared to the new Nintendo Switch 2. There’s also a huge second-hand market for it with the upcoming release of Nintendo’s latest console. Even before the announcement of the Switch 2, the prices for the first Switch don’t sting as much.

This will also depend on the model that you want to get. There are four different Switch consoles: the original Version 1, the upgraded Version 2, the OLED model, and the Lite model. I’ll recommend getting the OLED if you want to be able to dock the Switch to your monitor or TV. Lite will be the best option for on-the-go gaming, as the OLED is quite large.

Stability

Since the console’s been out for quite some time now, there aren’t as many bugs to deal with. It has been relatively stable since I bought and started using one last year. There aren’t many firmware updates to keep up with, compared to the updates required for a new console. There is also a high possibility that the Nintendo Switch 2 may encounter issues during its release.

Great game library

Numerous games have been released for the Switch, with some debuting in the current year. There are games for all genres, and I’m sure that you’ll be able to find a game that will hit the spot. There are a lot of role-playing games (RPGs) and casual games on the Switch. You can browse the eShop to see if there’s any game you’d like to pick up, or visit the physical stores that sell games.

Personally, I enjoy role-playing games on the Switch, with Persona 5 Royal being my favorite. Another game I wanted on the Switch was Urban Myth Dissolution Center, which shares a similar gameplay style to the Ace Attorney series. It’s also nice to just lie down and play my cozy games like Stardew Valley. I’ll most likely release a list of more Nintendo Switch games that you can play in the future.

Urban Myth Dissolution Center

There are several reasons to wait for the Nintendo Switch 2, including its backward compatibility with most of the existing Switch games, which will allow you to continue playing your current game library. The performance will surely be better with up to 120 FPS, a 1080p LCD screen with HDR, and having access to 4K when docked. The Joy-Cons have also been improved with magnets and new functions. Since it’s newer, you are future-proofing and will have more years of support and game releases. There are definitely many things to look forward to in the new console, but it’ll come with a substantial initial release price.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide whether or not to get the first Switch or wait for the release of the Switch 2. If you have some spare money to spend, consider whether it’s worth getting the latest release.

If you’re looking for some cozy games to play on your Nintendo Switch, if you decide to get one, then check out my list!
